The estranged husband of comedian Celeste Barber has broken his silence almost three months after he stunned her millions of fans by announcing their separation.

Api Robin was once a fixture in his famous wife’s viral comedy skits, joined her on tour, and was affectionately dubbed the ‘hot husband’ – but in February, he revealed they had split after 20 years together.

He broke the news a day before Valentine’s Day with a post captioned ‘heavy hearts’.

His explanation that they were both ‘at capacity’ and ‘have come to recognise we may want for different things’ hinted it was a complicated break-up.

Robin seemed to confirm this when the Mail spoke to him on Thursday, revealing he had been through ‘plenty of therapy’ in the wake of their split.

We caught up with him in Coolangatta, outside Barber’s swanky beachside apartment. He lives in a unit in nearby Tweed Heads, a two-minute drive away.

Living so close to one another, they have managed to maintain an amicable co-parenting arrangement for their sons, Buddy, 11, and Lou, 14. Api also has two older daughters from a previous relationship.

We stopped him just as he was picking up Buddy in the afternoon, after he had dropped him off with his mother earlier in the morning.

Waiting on his e-bike for his son to come down, Robin, dressed in a black T-shirt and sweatpants, had just got off a phone call with Barber when we approached him.

When asked how he was doing after the break-up, he said: ‘Not too bad, mate. We do okay.’

‘I probably don’t really want to say too much. Things are going okay. That’s all I can really say. It’s been okay. My son is about to come down. I’m just waiting for him.’

Despite not wanting to share the gritty details of their separation, he was certainly happy to talk about how he’s managed in the aftermath.

‘It is what it is. It’s an adjustment. Anything is an adjustment. Particularly what we’ve gone through,’ he said.

But despite how sunny he appeared, waiting by the road near the beach for his son, there was an air of sadness to Robin as he spoke about his life today.

‘It is. It is. There is a lot of heartfelt emotion,’ he said as he removed his sunglasses and settled onto his bike.

‘It’s everything. Well, certainly at the time.

‘There are so many moving parts to a relationship. There is a lot.’

Still, it sounds like he has a support network around him.

‘I’ve done plenty of therapy. I’ve talked to plenty of friends. I’m okay,’ he said.

‘And I think she is too,’ Robin added, his words sounding optimistic but bittersweet.

We also tried catching up with Barber, who recently returned to Australia after the European leg of her Backup Dancer comedy tour, but she declined to comment.

Our exclusive photos, taken on Thursday and Friday this week, suggest that their lives since the break-up are, in many ways, the same as they were before.

They remain in Queensland, raising their children – but, like many midlife couples who have been together for a long time, the emotional distance between them appears to have grown too wide to bridge.

Yet the fact they are still living just minutes apart is the clearest indication so far that there is no deeper scandal behind the break-up – that they were, like Robin said before, ‘at capacity’.

That may, in fact, be the most revealing detail of all.

Barber’s comedic schtick has long been her relatability – something that was always up for debate. But ironically, it’s her separation at 44 that may strike a far more resonant chord for her army of Gen X female fans than any sketch.

Because while she has yet to share her full account, Robin’s reference to therapy and the ‘heartfelt emotion’ suggests a relationship that didn’t implode in a celebrity scandal, but over time had quietly run out of road.

For the sort of women who idolise Barber, and may well be navigating the same stage of life, that truth will feel uncomfortably, and unmistakably, familiar.

The fact he put out a statement but she didn’t inevitably led to a flurry of speculation.

Those whispers intensified with the passive wording of his statement – ‘the decision has been made to separate’ – that did not clarify who initiated it, or if it was mutual.

Barber eventually addressed the split with a short comment weeks later when she posted a video on her Instagram promoting a mascara from her makeup brand BOOIE.

She joked that she was only ‘going to talk about mascara, and that’s all we’re going to talk about – how great this mascara is’.

However, Barber finished the short clip by leaning in close to the camera and whispering: ‘Thank you for all your lovely messages. I really appreciate it. Thank you.’

Robin’s earlier statement had read: ‘The past few months have been incredibly challenging and deeply heartbreaking for us both.

‘After much reflection, the decision has been made to separate.

‘There is still love and respect between us, but sadly we are at capacity and have come to recognise we may want for different things.

‘Our priority remains our children and their wellbeing. We kindly ask for privacy and understanding as we navigate this.’

While many fans blindsided, a glance at the pair’s social media activity, as well as previous interviews, revealed there had been signs of trouble in paradise for years.

Months before the split, they had been entirely absent from each other’s Instagrams, with both Barber and Robin sharing their last photo together in early November.

Barber had just wrapped the American leg of her Backup Dancer tour with Robin coming along for the ride, and they shared loved-up posts about their trip together.

She had kicked off the tour in late October, with footage showing her husband joining her backstage and expressing his pride over her thriving career.

But their final post together came in the first days of November when the US tour came to a close and the couple jetted home to Australia.

Barber shared a reel of photos and videos from the trip on November 1, showing the pair looking seemingly happier than ever as they attended events and cuddled on a New York City subway train.

The following day, Robin shared a similar post that appeared to be even more gushing as he said he was ‘so proud’ of his wife.

Since then, neither has mentioned the other on their social media accounts – minus addressing their split – with Robin even changing his Instagram bio from ‘hot husband’ to ‘formerly hot husband’.
