A Carlow GAA club have led tributes after the death of an “outstanding” member of their playing group in a tragic road crash.

Oisín Martin sadly lost his life in a single-car collision at around 6:20am on Wednesday. The crash took place at Ballytiglea on the R702 between Borris and Goresbridge.

There were no other passengers in the car and no other injuries have been reported.

His life being cut so short has prompted a wave of sadness around the community with his club Mount Leinster Rangers posting a heartfelt statement in his memory.

It read: “It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that we learned today of the tragic passing of our teammate and club member, Oisín, following an accident this morning.

“Oisín was an outstanding player for our club throughout the juvenile ranks, winning every A Hurling title up to U20 level as a tenacious and skilful defender.

“One of his proudest achievements came when he played a pivotal role at corner back as part of the team that secured our only A Football Championship title in the U20 final in recent years.

“Only last Friday evening, Oisín proudly lined out in the black and red in our Bolger Shield Hurling Semi-Final.

“The Martin family have always been a huge part of our club community, with John Joe giving so much through his involvement as a camogie and ladies football coach, and Oisín’s sisters — Hannah, Rachel and Emily — all representing the club with pride.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Breda, John Joe, Hannah, Rachel and Emily, along with Oisín’s extended family, teammates and his many friends during this incredibly difficult time.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. Funeral arrangements will be announced on Friday.”

At the time of writing the post has generated almost 1k likes and 77 comments offering sympathy and support.

One came from nearby club Naomh Bríd. They offered: “Sincere condolences to all of Oisín’s family, friends and teammates at this heartbreaking time.

“Wishing you all the strength to get through this. May he rest in peace.”

Similarly, Breda wrote: “Rest in peace Oisín…condolences to your family and many friends at this sad time.”

Meanwhile Michelle stated: “Sincere condolences to Oisín’s beautiful family, his friends and teammates. Such a tragic loss. Rest in peace Oisín.”

Finally, Martin prayed: “Deepest condolences and sympathy to his family.

“May Oisín have a bed among the saints. God bless you all.”

Oisín’s rip.ie post notes: “The death has occurred of Oisín Martin, who died suddenly on Wednesday morning 20th May.

“Oisín is deeply missed his by loving parents Breda and John Joe, sisters Emily, Hannah and Rachel, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and extended family.”
