He was caught with the cash when confronted by the Gardai’s Armed Support Unit at the Limerick City Hotel last October.

At the time, O’Reilly, 48, and his son were reported missing by concerned family members before being tracked down to Limerick.

In telephone exchanges with family members, vile O’Reilly had threatened to kill the schoolboy.

But his plans were foiled when the ASU stormed into his hotel room and rescued the boy before discovering the “bundles” of cash.

Gardai believe he stole the cash from a west Dublin drugs gang.

He was arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill and money laundering — but later released as cops prepared a file for the DPP.

One source said: “He had a lot of money on him when he was caught with the boy in October.

“When the child was discovered by Gardai in Limerick he didn’t make any fuss and was glad to be reunited with his relatives.”

At the time of the arrest, cops were working closely with child agency Tusla.

We understand extended family were trying to get custody of Oisin just last week.

Another source said: “It’s hard to believe that O’Reilly succeeded in his threats just a few months after the hotel incident.”

Investigators suspect Wayne O’Reilly murdered Oisin at around midnight on Wednesday into Thursday before fleeing and subsequently taking his own life at a separate property.

Wayne was found dead on Thursday morning at the rear of a house in Cherry Orchard Drive, Ballyfermot.

MAJOR INVESTIGATION

Gardai immediately feared for his son Oisin, who was then discovered in his bedroom at their home at Lealand Drive in Clondalkin by a devastated relative.

Officers believe Oisin died from asphyxiation.

Post-mortems on the bodies were completed yesterday, but results of the examinations are not being released for operational reasons.

Cops have established that Wayne was seen leaving the Clondalkin house in and around midnight, and suspect he had murdered Oisin shortly beforehand.

Officers had previously engaged with Wayne in the past over mental health issues, but he was known to have abused drugs also.

Tusla, the child and family agency, confirmed Oisin and the family were known to its services, but said the boy was not in its care.

Gardai will investigate the case thoroughly to establish as many facts as possible before ultimately preparing a file for the coroner’s court.
