Keir Starmer was heavily criticised by Kemi Badenoch, who slammed Labour for its string of U-turns. From the winter fuel payment to tax hikes on farmers, the Labour government has folded under public pressure a total of 13 times since coming into office. Halting GB News for a breaking announcement, Nana Akua was joined by the Conservative MP, who did not hold back in expressing her frustration at Starmer’s repeated policy reversals.

Akua noted that some might view these reversals as a sign of strength, showing a willingness to correct mistakes, but she challenged the Tory leader on whether Labour’s repeated U-turns are evidence of resilience or “utter weakness”. The politician responded: “There are some people who change their minds depending on which way the wind is blowing, and if they think things are going left, they go left, and if they think things are going right, they go right. They don’t have their own position. They don’t have their own views – that’s what Keir Starmer is.”

Continuing her fiery rant, she said: “In fact, he’s worse than that. Last week I said he’s like a plastic bag blowing in the wind. He doesn’t know what he wants. His MPs pushing one way, he reads the newspapers then goes another way.”

Badenoch insisted the country “can’t be run like that” and claimed Labour’s constant U-turns are because Keir Starmer “did not have a plan for government”.

She added: “All he had was a plan to win elections. This is why I’m telling people, please beware of the people who are only talking about winning elections, polls, deals, they are thinking about themselves. You have to think about people who act in the national interests, not just in their self interests.”

The government recently backtracked on digital ID cards, which had been due to become compulsory following their introduction in 2029.

Last year, the Prime Minister set out plans to introduce the compulsory scheme requiring every adult in the UK to carry identification as part of the government’s efforts to tackle illegal immigration.

However, it will now be voluntary rather than mandatory. The Conservative Party welcomed the move but said it was “yet another humiliating U-turn” from the Prime Minister.

Shadow Cabinet Office Minister Mike Wood said: “Keir Starmer’s spinelessness is becoming a pattern, not an exception. What was sold as a tough measure to tackle illegal working is now set to become yet another costly, ill-thought-out experiment abandoned at the first sign of pressure from Labour’s backbenches.

“Only the Conservatives have the plan and the team to restore common sense to public policy.”
