THE body of a man in his 50s has been found in woodland near a primary school last night.

Emergency services scrambled to the scene at the junction of Old Durham Road and Split Crow Road in Gateshead at around 3.45pm on Tuesday.

Four police vehicles were spotted at the scene and a cordon was erected.

The force confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that a man was found dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

The tragic discovery was made across the road from South Street Primary School.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 4pm yesterday (Tuesday), we received a report of concern for the welfare of a man who was within a small piece of woodland near the intersection of Old Durham Road, Split Crow Road, and Shipcoate Terrace in Gateshead.

“Sadly, upon emergency service arrival, a man in his 50s was found dead at the scene.

“The man’s next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time.

“The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious by officers and a report has been made for the coroner.”

It comes after cops launched an investigation after a man was found dead at a park in Bristol.

Cops rushed to Cotham Gardens after members of the public reported concerns for the welfare of the individual.

The scene was reportedly cordoned off while one witness said the area was “completely surrounded by police”.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigations into the victim’s death are ongoing.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police has said: “Officers were called at 7.45am today (Tuesday 20 January) to Cotham Gardens, in Bristol, after a member of the public raised concerns for an individual’s welfare.

“Sadly, despite the efforts of emergency personnel, a man was pronounced dead.

“His death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

“A scene remains in place and members of the public can expect to see a heightened police presence.”
