Four people have been arrested in police raids in connection with a fatal head-on crash in Bolton.

Officers investigating the ‘devastating’ crash on Wigan Road on Sunday, January 11, raided a number of properties in the Bolton area this morning (February 5). Police arrested a woman, 42, and a man, 46, on suspicion of fraud offences.

A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods. An 18-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said. All four suspects have been taken into custody for questioning.

Four people were killed in the head-on crash after a red Seat Leon collided head-on with a Citroen C4 Picasso taxi. Mohammed Jibrael Mukhtar, 18, the driver of the Seat, and passengers Farhan Imtiyaz Patel, 18, and Mohammed-Danyaal Asghar-Ali, 19, all lost their lives. The driver of the taxi, 54-year-old Masrob Ali, was also killed.

Five passengers, four from the taxi and one from the Seat, were rushed to hospital from the scene. In the update issued today, the GMP spokesperson said a woman who suffered life-threatening injuries is now in a ‘stable’ condition.

Following the arrests, Detective Inspector Andrew Page, from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our investigation into this tragic incident is progressing and has led to four arrests from two warrants in Bolton this morning. We have undertaken significant prevention activity across Bolton, with local PCSOs on the streets to reassure the community and they are on hand to answer any queries members of the public may have.

The Manchester Evening News previously spoke to husband and wife Tom, 29, and Georgina Daniels, 28, who were two of the passengers in the taxi. The couple were left with ‘severe and life-altering’ injuries.

They were travelling with two of their best friends, a 29-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man who wish to remain anonymous. They were also been left with horrific injuries.

Speaking previously from her hospital bed, Georgina said: “I can’t fathom how we’re all still alive – it should have taken our lives. I have no idea how we’re all still here after seeing what happened to everyone and the state we are all in.

“The pain we’ve been in itself has been relentless, just unbearable. Our lives will never be the same again.”

A fundraiser for the taxi passengers injured in the crash has now hit an incredible milestone of £50,000. The funds are set to be shared between the four survivors to ‘support immediate expenses not covered by insurance’, and is also intended ‘to relieve some of the pressure on their families’.

Masrob Ali, the taxi driver who died in the crash, was described by his daughter Humayra as ‘the gentlest soul’ who had been a hard-working and devoted father. “He was so kind and the best dad”, she said.

The grieving family of one of the Seat passengers killed in the crash, Mohammed-Danyaal Asghar-Ali, said their ‘world had been shattered’ as they paid tribute to him. In the tribute, issued via GMP, his parents said they wanted to send condolences on behalf of the family ‘to all the families who have lost a precious loved one’.

They said their thoughts and sympathies were also with those who were injured in the tragedy. “My condolences to all the families who have lost a precious loved one, and my deepest sympathy goes out to all the people injured in the horrific tragedy – I too feel your pain, as I have lost my innocent boy who sat in the back of that car not knowing he will never see us again”, Danyaal’s mum and dad said.

Inquests into the deaths of the four killed in the crash were opened and adjourned at a coroner’s court last week. Brief, largely administrative hearings were held at Bolton Coroner’s Court last Wednesday afternoon.

The brother of Mohammed Mukhtar previously spoke out on his public TikTok page in the wake of the crash. He issued a public apology to the family of the taxi driver and the survivors as he claimed his brother was driving at around 90mph at the time of the crash.

He said his brother had made ‘a huge, huge mistake’ and added that he had repeatedly told him to slow down while out driving.
