RADIO “legend” James Stannage has passed away at the age of 76.

The Manchester broadcaster died on Monday morning following a year-long battle with cancer, his son said.

Darren Stannage said his dad passed away listening to music, and surrounded by people who love him.

He wrote in a heartfelt tribute: “Someone who meant so much to so many people in Manchester”.

Stannage had been broadcasting live to listeners since the 1970s, making him a “legend in Manchester”.

His career was varied, spanning a number of stations and online radio.

The politics and sports discussion show on Piccadilly Radio that he hosted was popular with listeners for its heated debates.

His outspoken style gained him quick popularity in the media industry.

One fan referred fondly to the host’s live unfiltered debates as “one in a million.”

Darren recalled his father’s time as a radio host, reflecting on the “many stories and memories”.

He called it a “remarkable time” and one that secured his “legend” status.

Fans flocked online to share tributes to Stannage.

One said: “He was such a lovely guy and will be sadly missed.”

Another fan reflecting said: “I often stayed up till the early hours of the morning listening to the shows.”

A third said: “He inspired my love of talk radio.”
