McIlroy had dominated the first two rounds at Augusta before blowing a six-stroke lead at the midway point.

He managed to pull it back on the final day to go 12-under and win by a shot.

The Northern Irishman banked over £3.3million ($4.5m) as a result, taking his total earnings from the competition to around £10m.

It also saw him move closer to golf legend Tiger Woods on total career earnings.

McIlroy has amassed £85.5m ($114.7m) in his career so far, just under £5m less than his American rival.

The Masters Champion has also earned more than the likes of Scheffler (£77m, $103.3m), Phil Mickleson (£72m, $96.7m) and Rose (£56.6m, $76m) over the last 19 years.

Since turning professional in 2007, McIlroy has won six major titles.

His first Masters win last Spring saw him become just the sixth player to complete a career Grand Slam.

The Brit had made 16 appearances at Augusta before winning his first crown.

On three occasions he did not take home any prize money.

Prior to last year, his biggest Masters payday was £1.2m ($1.6m) in 2022 – when he finished second behind Scheffler.

As the runner-up this year, Scheffler took home £1.8m ($2.43m).

McIlroy will look to add to his earnings and close in on Woods even more at the RBC Heritage in South Carolina this week.

Woods is currently taking a break from the sport following a car accident.

The American, 50, has won 15 major titles in his career, including five Masters crowns.

They have resulted in him being the highest-earning PGA Tour golfer of all time.
