‘The Meghan effect’: Fans spot subtle detail in Prince William and Kate Middleton’s new family photo marking 15th wedding anniversary
Prince William and Princess Catherine have released a candid new family photo to mark their 15th wedding anniversary – but one detail has fans drawing comparisons to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
The Prince and Princess of Wales have shared a touching new family photograph as they celebrate 15 years of marriage.
In the photo, William, 43, and Catherine, 44, are seen lying in the grass, laughing with their three children: Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, eight.
The Instagram post also featured the family’s cocker spaniel, Orla, and one of her puppies.
William and the children dressed casually in shorts and T-shirts, while Kate opted for cream trousers and a striped knitted top for the photograph, which was taken during their Easter holiday in Cornwall.
However, in a noticeable departure from their usual formal attire, all five royals were barefoot – a detail that drew quick comparisons to other, controversial family members.
“The Meghan Markle effect in full swing,” one person wrote on social media, while another asked: “So it’s OK for these people to go barefoot, but not Harry, Meghan, or their children?”
The Duchess of Sussex regularly posts photos and videos of her family wearing no shoes, and she was often seen cooking and gardening barefoot on her With Love, Meghan Netflix show.
The habit has drawn some criticism over the years, but Meghan has defended it, saying she believes it makes her more approachable.
“It demystifies,” she told her friend Courtney Adamo in October. “People walk in and go, ‘Oh, she’s in this with me’…and suddenly everyone’s a little bit softened.”
Meghan also revealed how she was barefoot when she met William and Kate in 2017.
“Even when Will and Kate came over, and I had met her for the first time, they came over for dinner. I remember I was in ripped jeans, and I was barefoot,” she recalled in her 2022 Netflix docuseries, Harry and Meghan.
“Like, I was a hugger, I’ve always been a hugger. I didn’t realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits.”
William and Kate’s new family portrait marks 15 years since they married in Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011.
The pair met while studying at the University of St Andrews, and their wedding was watched by billions of people worldwide.
On the day, Prince Harry served as the best man, as William did for his brother when he wed Meghan in 2018.
