Former Attorney General Pam Bondi was diagnosed with thyroid cancer after being removed from the Justice Department in April.
Bondi, 60, confirmed the news to CNN on Wednesday, May 27, saying she is recovering and “doing well” as she undergoes treatment, which included a surgical procedure “a few weeks ago.” Axios was first to report the news the day prior.
Following the initial report, Katie Miller — a conservative podcaster and former Trump official who is married to senior White House adviser Stephen Miller — seemingly confirmed the news on X. Katie shared a screenshot of the Axios article, writing: “Pam has been quietly kicking cancer’s ass the last few weeks. @PamBondi has a heart of gold 💛.”

The report of Bondi’s diagnosis came amid news that she’d been appointed to the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), an advisory committee focused on AI policy, weeks after she was ousted from her role by President Donald Trump in early April.
Bondi will reportedly be responsible for coordination between White House AI adviser David Sacks and White House science adviser Michael Kratsios, and the panel’s tech executives, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison and NVIDIA co-founder Jensen Huang, per Axios.
Bondi was fired on April 1, when Trump announced the change in position during a live address to the nation. Deputy Todd Blanche has assumed the role of the acting attorney general until a permanent replacement is chosen.
Fox News reported that she was notified of her removal before the address and that she was returning to her home state of Florida during the broadcast.
Trump later said in a Truth Social post on April 2 that Bondi would “be transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future.” Her framed portraits in the Justice Department’s offices were photographed in a trash bin on April 3, MS NOW reported.

Her departure followed months of controversy and public, bipartisan backlash over her department’s handling of the Epstein files —the massive trove of evidence from the 2019 federal investigation into the financier’s alleged child sex trafficking.
Additionally, Trump reportedly became disgruntled with Bondi for not pursuing more cases against his political opponents, according to CNN. His reported frustrations emerged despite the Justice Department launching investigations or charging numerous prominent Democrats, anti-Trump Republicans and other political foes on her watch.
Bondi also drew criticism for her purge of career Justice Department employees who worked on former Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigations into Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot and his alleged mishandling of classified documents after he left office.
