Rylan Clark says ‘I’ve had enough’ and slams snub as BBC Radio 2 show descends into chaos
Rylan Clark declared ‘I’m done’ on his BBC Radio 2 show on Saturday in a chaotic moment, before handing over hosting duties to his producer following an awkward mix-up
Rylan Clark found himself handing over control of his BBC Radio 2 show to his co-star on Saturday, following an embarrassing on-air gaffe.
The incident came after the presenter had already been bemoaning the fact that his weekend programme has yet to pick up any awards.
Things began to unravel when Rylan’s regular Couch Potatoes quiz descended into chaos. The star welcomed back two former winners to battle it out once more, but was furnished with the wrong information about which listener he would be speaking to first.
He introduced the first contestant as Matt, when he was in fact talking to the second contestant, Mark, prompting Rylan to tell his producer, Simon, to “just admit you got it wrong”.
Rylan then offered an apology before realising he had muddled up the two names once more, with Mark setting the record straight: “It’s Mark! I’m Mark, I’m the champion from a few weeks ago!”
As the entire studio erupted in laughter, a flustered Rylan jokingly cried out: “Oh no, this is ridiculous! Right, hang on a minute, is there a ghost or something? What is going on? Everyone stop! Stop, collaborate and listen, stop!”
Shedding some light on the mix-up, Rylan told his listeners: “I was just told that I was speaking to Matt, then I was speaking to Mark and then four people started talking… and it all just got a bit confusing.”
After clarifying “I’ve sorted it all now”, Rylan turned his attention to Matt, asking how he was, to which the listener replied: “I’m not bad! Firstly, how you’re not up for an award for your show, I just don’t know!”
Clearly touched by the kind words, Rylan took a playful dig at The ARIAS (The Audio and Radio Industry Awards) for overlooking him, quipping: “Thank you, thank you! Do you know what I mean?
“Always snubbed at The ARIAS even though I host the thing. It kills me, I’m the host of it and I can’t even get a nomination!”
Rylan was then interrupted once more by Simon over the way he was running the quiz, prompting him to throw in the towel and hand over to producer Lotte Uttley and traffic reporter Sally Boazman.
The former X Factor star explained: “Simon is talking in my ear again, I’m just going to put this out there, Simon is going, ‘Mark’s first, it’s clear in the script’, I said, ‘yes, but Mark was our original champion, right? So I thought our new champion would go first this week’. We’ve had this conversation three times, Simon!
“Lotte, Sally, do you know what? Lotte, for today, do you know what’s going to happen? You’re going to ask the questions, I’m going to be a lifeline. I’m done!
“Come round here, come round here, now you can see what I have to put up with!”
Following a musical interlude, Lotte took charge of the quiz, announcing to listeners: “Well, apparently, we’re back for Couch Potatoes. Now, a little bit of a change of plan…”
Sally then interjected with “Rylan’s having a tantrum”, to which the presenter fired back: “I’ve had enough!”
Despite the mayhem, Rylan, who was making his debut as a quiz lifeline, went on to express how immensely proud he was of Lotte for stepping up to take the reins as host, after she had openly admitted to feeling anxious about reading aloud live on air due to her dyslexia.
